Understanding the Jeppesen
An essential tool for any instrument-rated pilot.
The Jeppesen is used by pilots worldwide, and contains a wealth of information if you know how to use it. Written by an experienced instrument-rated pilot, this straightforward guide demystifies the Jeppesen and teaches you how to use it to its full potential.
To be able to use the Jeppesen Airway Manual effectively the pilot needs to understand the format used, as well as where to find the relevant information. This guide has been written to help pilots gain a better understanding of the Jeppesen, thereby improving safety and increasing their effectiveness both in the cockpit and during preparation for the flight. There is no doubt that the better a pilot knows the Jeppesen, the safer the operation will be.
It is important to recognize that all sections of the Jeppesen are significant. A common fault of inexperienced pilots is to think that only the enroute charts and letdown plates need to be understood. Although these sections are used more often, it does not make the other sections any less important.
Understanding the Jeppesen includes information on:
- Deciphering charts
- How charts are designed
- All Weather Operations (AWOPS)
- The difference between PANS-OPS, PANS-OPS 3 and PANS-OPS 4, and how this affects you as a pilot.
