Cape Town Flying Club

Foreign Private Pilot License

Training at Cape Town Flying ClubThe foreign license must be valid in the country of issue. Any validation granted by the South African CAA will only be valid for as long as the foreign license/medical is valid; in any case never more than 2 years.

1) AIR LAW examination

This 25 question, multiple choice exam can be taken at Cape Town Flying Club at any time. The relevant regulations may be studied at the Club. A pilot who is familiar with the English language should take about two to three hours studying the regulations. The passmark is 75%.

2) Flight Test

The pilot must pass a flight test of about 3 hours duration, comprising:

  • Steep turns (45° angle of bank), stalls, incipient spins
  • Forced landings with and without power
  • Normal, short field, crosswind take-offs and landings
  • Triangular cross-country flight
  • Depending on the experience of the foreign pilot, some dual instruction may be necessary before taking the flight test.

3) Issuing of validated Pilot's License

The following papers must now be sent to the Civil Aviation Authority:

  • Validated Radio License (see 1 above)
  • Certified copy of foreign PPL
  • Form CAA6118 (Application for Validation of Pilot License)
  • Form CAA61-16 (Examination and Flight Test report for PPLs)
  • R280 cheque or money deposit into:
    Account no. 013007971
    Standard Bank
    Brooklyn Branch
    Branch code 011245

>> The instructor will be only to glad to help you fill in the forms and arrange for them to be sent off to the CAA.

4) Hiring of aircraft from Good Hope Flying Club

The Club has a Piper PA-28-161 Warrior, a Cessna 172 Skyhawk and two Cessna 172RG Cutlasses with retractable gear and variable pitch propellers for self-fly hire.

A plane can be hired for any period of time, but if the plane is taken away for an extended period, then there is a minimum charge of 2 hrs per week day and 4 hrs per weekend day.
(See also the Club Rules page)

To hire an aircraft the foreign pilot must have a validated license (see above), be completely proficient in the South African radio procedures and satisfy the Club as to his proficiency in flying, particularly with respect to short field performance, high density altitude flying, flying in high winds and crosswinds, and map reading in sparsely populated areas.

If a pilot has a validated license and is proficient in flying, but does not feel totally confident with the South African radio procedures, we may be able to arrange an "accompanying pilot". This would typically be a PPL, who would not be paid for his services. His/her expenses (food, accommodation, etc.) would have to be carried by the foreign pilot. The pilot in command (PIC) is the foreign pilot.

Pilots not wishing to go through the trouble of validating their license may fly with an instructor and pay normal instruction rates as well as any food or accommodation for the instructor on the trip if necessary.
